COVID-19: PUBLIC TRANSPORT SLUMP A ‘STRUCTURAL SHIFT’, WITH WORK FROM HOME TO STAY A Covid-driven slump of more than 40 per cent in Auckland’s public transport use may not fully recover for years. Analysis shows the impact of changing habits, such as working from home. According to Auckland Transport (AT), the city is experiencing not only a blip but a “significant structural change” to demand for public transport, including a small shift back to cars. Many regular users were boarding public transport less frequently, and most planned to stick with their new pattern.

33 MAYORS NATIONWIDE CALL ON JACINDA ARDERN FOR INQUIRY INTO BANK CLOSURES Thirty three mayors from Far North to Southland called on the New Zealand government to launch a formal inquiry into the impact of the country’s banks closing branches in provincial communities. The mayors signed a letter to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, calling for the Government to intervene and encourage banks to consider more than just economics when it comes to closing branches. They noted that access to an ATM did not address “the social harm and problems” caused by closing branches that support provincial communities and economies.

The aim is to help those vulnerable to Covid-19 who can’t shop during Alert Level 3, TVNZ reports. Since alert levels shifted on Sunday, the organisation said it received calls from older and immuno-compromised people who were concerned about how they could shop. The Student Volunteer Army has partnered with supermarket New World for the scheme. People who want to use the scheme are asked to visit the Student Volunteer Army website, or call 0800 005 902.
AUCKLAND IN ‘SLOW RECOVERY’ FROM DROUGHT FOLLOWING DRY SUMMER Auckland faces a “slow recovery” from the worst drought in its history, due to another dry summer. Dams in the Hunua and Waitakere ranges are at 58 per cent capacity as of March 1, which is 23 per cent below normal levels. Nevertheless, new water sources are on the horizon, and dam levels are dropping at a slower rate than they were last summer.
