Indirect statement: The friend says the girl loves the boy.

  • Look for verbs of saying, thinking, perceiving, informing, remembering, etc.
  • She said that… dico, nuntio, nego
  • She thought that… existimo, puto,credo
  • He saw that… video, cerno, sentio
  • He knew that… nesco, scio
  • She wrote that… scribo, moneo

  • Main verb of saying, thinking, etc.
  • Subject of the indirect statement goes into the accusative case
  • Verb of the indirect statement goes into the infinitive

The boy says the girl loves him.

  • The tenses of the main verbs are absolute tenses- they refer to real time, can be any of the six tenses
  • The tenses of the infinitives are relative tenses- they tell when the action happened relative to the main verb
    • same time as main verb
    • Before the main verb
