  1. Mindfulness, A Climate of Calm Contemplative Exercise #1 Nature Walk

  2. 1.Nature Retrieval:Blade of grass Flower • In small groups, ask the children to find the biggest blade of grass and most beautiful flower they can find. • Bring the children back to the group and ask them individually to describe their items, drawing attention to their senses: sight, touch and smell.

  3. 3. Drawing TOUCH • Ask the child to draw the blade of grass and flower however they see it. SIGHT • As they are drawing, ask the child to examine the items even closer, and try to draw the subtleties of the items. For example, a blade of grass may have shades of yellow and brown upon close inspection. Flower petals may have pollen specs, sun fading, etc.

  4. 2. Focus on the senses HearingSightTouch SmellTaste SMELL AND TASTE • Smell the flower and blade of grass. What foods come to mind? HEARING • Draw the child’s attention to the environmental noises. What do they hear? Have each child say a noise they hear when eyes are shut.

  5. 4. Focus on Awareness • Ask children to remove their shoes and sit with their feet on the grass. • Ask them to close their eyes and listen to all the sounds, feel the sun, the wind, and take one deep breath in and out. • Ask each child to describe their experience outside, freeing the group to speak about anything from the grass and flower to the feeling of the grass on their feet.
