  4. Only transitive verbs (verbs that are followed by an object) are used in the passive. It is impossible to use verbs such as happen, sleep, come, and seem (intransitive verbs) in the passive Active : An accident happened last night Passive : none

  5. Using the passive • Usually the passive is used without a “by phrase.” The passive is most frequently used when it is known or not important to know exactly who performs an action. • For example : A digital camera is produced in Sanyo company. IEC was established in 1969. Rice is grown in Cianjur.

  6. The “by phrase” is included only if it is important to know who performs an action. • For example : Eat, Pray, and Love movie was acted by Julia Robert.

  7. If the speaker/hearer knows who performs an action, usually the active is used. • For example : My elder sister made a nice dress for me.

  8. The passive may be used with the “by phrase” instead of the active when the speaker/writer wants to focus on attention on the subject of a sentence. • For example : (a) My elder sister made a nice dress for me. (active) (b) A nice dress was made by my elder sister for me. (passive)

  9. Indirect Objects as Passive Subjects • Either an indirect object(I.O.) or a direct object (D.O.) may become the subject of a passive sentence. • My beloved man gave mea lovely wristwatch last year. I.O D.O. • I was given a lovely wristwatch last year

  10. When the direct object becomes the subject, to usually used in front of the indirect object. • A lovely wristwatch was given to me.
