The Mission of Central Magnet School is to challenge each student, teacher and parent with the high expectations of a challenging curriculum; To provide students with a rigorous educational program in a collaborative setting, with emphasis on mastery of academics, critical thinking, effective communication skills, and character development. The Finest School Environment in Rutherford County • Our goal is that each student will have at least two years of college credit at the time of graduation from CMS. • Above all, CMS will provide an environment of high expectations where students are continually encouraged and empowered to develop a greater sense of confidence through self-sufficiency and pride in their academic accomplishments. CMS Contract • Each student signs a contract with his/her parents, faculty and administration committing to: • Complete a challenging curriculum of Honor-level courses with a minimum of four Advanced Placements courses • Complete a summer reading list each year • Demonstrate advanced levels of proficiency in a foreign language CMS

  7. CMS Contract • Complete a senior thesis that requires original research, collaborative study/research with a professional mentor, and the oral defense of the thesis; and • Complete a 100-hour community service requirement during high school. CMS

Senior Thesis • A year-long research project with the guidance and direction of our faculty and a mentor (a professional in the field of interest). • Unique opportunity for guided but independent research in the field of student’s choice. • Opportunity for publication in academic or professional journals. CMS

  9. Advanced Placement Courses • AP courses offer the opportunity to earn college credit while in high school. Juniors and seniors will often take as many as 5 AP courses.   10. Guidance • Your child will have the same guidance counselor 6-12 grade. • Each guidance counselor will specialize in specific scholarship opportunities • Each guidance counselor will specialize in specific highly selective schools. CMS

  11. Advisor • Each student will have a the same faculty advisor 6-12 grade. • The advisor will: • help with scholarships • provide support for the student • help register student each year • keep records of community service • chair the student’s thesis committee CMS

  12. Project Lead the WayEngineering • The program offers students in-depth, hands-on knowledge of engineering and technology-based careers. The three-tiered approach to learning flows from foundation courses to specialization courses to a capstone course. • The program will begin in the 6-8 grades. CMS

  19. Sports • We offer a full range of sports to our students. Due to small school population, 9th graders often contribute to the varsity teams almost immediately. • Tennis • Cross-country • Basketball • Volleyball • Trap • Cheerleading • Soccer • Baseball • Softball • Golf • Swimming • Bowling • Track CMS Students will have the opportunity to play any sport not offered at CMS at another Rutherford County High School.

Admission Requirements • Students must be residents of Rutherford County and complete a CMS application.  • Students are required to have at least a 3.0 GPA and minimum scores at least at the 80th percentile in two of the areas tested by the TCAP each of the two years prior to application. CMS

  21. Admission Requirements • Students will receive points in each of the following areas: • GPA • TCAP Testing • Explore Testing for incoming high school students • The students will be accepted in order of their cumulative scores CMS

  22. Application Process • December 1 – Applications available • January 31 – Applications deadline • Letters will be mailed at the earliest date possible. Parents will have two weeks to accept or reject the placement. CMS
