HW: Extra Credit Illustration • Answer the following questions in complete sentences! • Were you surprised by the end of the story? Why or why not? • What questions do you have about the story?

Quiz Directions: Answer the following questions in complete sentences on a separate sheet of loose-leaf paper. Be specific and thorough in your answers. • What is magical realism? • Describe one example of magical realism in this story. • Who kidnaps Erendira and why? • How does the grandmother get her back? • What happened when Ulises and Erendira tried to run away together? • Describe what happened to the photographer. • Describe Ulises’ three attempts to kill the grandmother. What method did he use each time and what happened? • How does the story end?

HW: Work on making up any missed quarter three assignments, or complete the extra credit homework assignment. • In at least three complete sentences, make an inference about why do you think Erendira might have run away from Ulises at the end?

Contextualizing and Analyzing Key Passages from “Innocent Erendira” by Participating in a Collaborative Text-Marking Activity Guidelines: For this activity, you will be working in a group of three to look closely at an important passage from the text. The three of you will be working on a text marking poster that you will then share with other members of the class. Each person in your group must: • Carefully read the quote (you can read it together) • Contribute to all three sections of the poster. • Be thorough and specific. • Focus on the work of your group and avoid side-conversations and other distracting off-task behavior. • One person should not be doing all of the writing! • You will receive a class work grade for the completion and quality of your work (6 points) as well as a citizenship grade based on your focus and behavior (4 points).

  11. Wednesday 3/9/11 (double block)Learning Goals: SWBAT1. Explain the steps for answering an MCAS open response question. 2. Identify the parts of an open response outline. What is an ORQ? How many will I have to write on the MCAS Exam? • ORQ= Open Response Question. • You will be given a writing prompt/question that is directly connected to one of the passages on the exam. • You will write a 1-2 paragraph response using at least two quotes from the passage. • You will be scored based on a 0-4 point rubric. • There will be four ORQ’s on the exam (36 multiple choice questions, 4 ORQ’s and one long comp.)

  12. Guidelines: As a closing to the Marquez story, you will analyze “The Incredible and Sad Tale of Erendira and Her Heartless Grandmother” by writing an MCAS open-response question composition. The purpose of this assessment is for you to show how much you understood the short story and also to further prepare you for the upcoming MCAS exam. Follow the steps below to complete all pieces of the assessment: “The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Erendira and Her Heartless Grandmother” ORQ Final Assessment • Turn the prompt into a kid friendly question (KFQ) • Identify two-three potential pieces of evidence • Work with a partner to write a topic sentence (“mini-thesis statement”) that conveys an accurate and sophisticated understanding of the short story and that addresses the prompt. • Identify the parts of your composition by filling in the parts of the outline. • Complete an ORQ outline. • Work on improving your analysis by using sentence chaining. • Use the rubric to revise/improve your ORQ. • Use writing time in class wisely! • Ask for help if you get stuck!
