Purpose of a PS • Precise Positioning Service (PPS) PS -- published Feb 2007: • Defines current service provided to military/authorized users • DoD commitments for the PPS SIS • What PPS users can count on the PPS SIS to provide • Basis for military GPS safety certifications • Example: Certifying PPS for use in safety of life applications • Standard Positioning Service (SPS) PS -- published Oct 2001: • Defines service provided to non-military GPS users • Defines current DoD commitments for the SPS SIS • What SPS users can count on the SPS SIS to provide • SPS PS is basis for all civil GPS safety certifications • Example: SPS use in IFR navigation by civil aviation
