  3. Professionalism What is it? 1. professional standards: the skill, competence, or character expected of a member of a highly trained profession.

  4. CommunicationEmail or Phone? Which is your preference?

  5. Email Pros • Convenient • Some topics can be communicated better in writing (directions, etc.) • Permanent Cons • Does not include non-verbal cues • Misspelled words costs credibility • Lacks privacy • Permanent

  6. Email Just a quick update, I spoke with Ms. M, atPC services, they plan on attending the bash, they have a lot "New" bicycle helmets they wish to donation for kid's i wish to have us have first choice on this however please run this by Susie and her check with Cris Holly. We not going to down them down i just wish to be fair to everyone allso we will have Am services- call or check? they do for the old people. Im all for the senior citizens.

  7. Email • Clearly summarize the contents of your message in the subject line. • Don't use the CC (Carbon Copy) function to copy your message to everyone. • When responding to e-mail, do not respond to all recipients, unless you absolutely need to. • Keep your messages short and focused • Avoid using all capital letters. IT’S THE EQUIVALENT TO SHOUTING IN SPEECH • Don't write anything you wouldn't say in public. If you don't want to potentially share something you write, consider using the telephone. • Don’t use emoticons in business emails. • Nasty e-mails should always be avoided. • As a courtesy to your recipient, include your name at the bottom of the message. • Check your spelling and grammar • Consider using a signature at the bottom of your email. This will provide the recipient with all your contact information • Although adding quotes to your signature is not widely accepted, if you do use these, make them appropriate and brief

  8. Phone Pros • Can be quick • Can be immediate • Hard to ignore • Includes tone of your voice and other non-verbal cues • Provides better “give and take” Cons • Does not include visual communication cues • Sometimes it is inconvenient • Sometimes leads to “phone tag”

  9. Texting • Pros • Timely • Quick • Cons • Bad for long messages • “Slang” slips in too easily…lmao

  10. Appearance • Dress in no less than business casual • Guys – shave it or grow it • Look good and you’ll feel good • Think this isn’t important anymore? • Check this out

  11. How to ask for something • Please send the spreadsheets we talked about yesterday. • Our team will be comparing your company expense ratios with industry benchmarks on Friday. Is it possible for you to send your company’s last four years of financial statement to me by Noon on Thursday? • Thanks for your help.

  12. How to follow up Bill, I haven’t received the spreadsheets from you yet and I was concerned that I missed them. If they weren’t sent yet, do you know when I can expect to receive them? *It is more important to fix the problem than to fix the blame.

  13. Timeliness • Arrive at a meeting between 5 and 10 minutes early • When you promise something will be done at a certain time, get it there earlier than promised • Hold your client to the same standard

  14. Writing • Proofread, proofread, proofread • Have someone proof the section that s/he didn’t write • USE YOUR SPELL & GRAMMAR CHECK!!!!!

  15. Professionalism • Skill • Communication, Leadership, Followership • Competence • Tools & Knowledge • Character • Integrity, Timeliness, Personal Presentation • Focus on the client Practice now so it becomes your nature!
