  1. What is microwave ashing? Microwave ashing​ is nothing but a simple and commonly used technique throughout the world by elemental scientists to dissolve heavy metals. They do this in the presence of organic molecules prior to analysis by ​inductively ​coupled plasma, ​atomic emission​​measurements​, or ​atomic absorption​. This technique is usually accomplished by exposing a sample to a ​strong acid​ in a closed vessel. After placing the sample in a closed vessel, with the assistance of microwave irradiation the pressure as well as temperature in raised. The speed of thermal decomposition of the sample and the solubility of heavy metals in the solution is increases by the increase in the temperature and pressure of the low ​pH​ sample. The use of​ microwave ashing technology​ for the purpose of ashing metals has resulted in a significant advantage in terms of internal quality control and in case of complex sample preparation, it has simplified the process along with ensuring the safety of the analyst. But still many laboratories use the decades old traditional ​electrical furnaces or muffle furnace when it comes to ashing the sample for the process control purposes.
