In today's GEOG 101 class, we explored the vital topic of watersheds, focusing on Nanaimo's 86% ownership by Island Timberlands. We discussed the implications of unrestricted water access for the city and the alarming new findings linking air pollution to lung cancer. We were honored to have Janice Melvin as a special guest, who shared her life cycle analysis of the only green roof on campus. We also watched a segment from "Empty Oceans: Global Competition for Scarce Resources," delving into the pressing issues surrounding environmental sustainability.

GEOG 101: Day 14 Special Guest and start of Chapter 13
Housekeeping Items • I’m enjoying reading your outdoor assignments! • I checked with the City, and Nanaimo’s watershed is approximately 86% owned by Island Timberlands and 14% owned by Timber West. The City does not pay to access the water within the watershed. • There was an article in the Friday Nanaimo Daily News that it is now conclusively proven that all air pollution causes lung cancer. • We have a special guest speaker today – Janice Melvin – who will be telling you about her life cycle analysis of the only green roof on campus, and she has brought along some people to listen in. Janice was a student in this class about two years ago. For this week’s topic, we watched about half of “Empty Oceans: Global Competition for Scarce Resources” (http://digital.films.com/PortalViewVideo.aspx?xtid=35283)
