  4. The SLCS is a non-profit community based organization committed to the conservation of the local wildlife and natural resources of the National Park and surrounding Game Management Areas. CEO Rachel McRobb prepares darts for Elephant Rescue Effort

  5. Gis maps • Map Data • Poaching routes • Elephant Mortality • Seasonal Trends – Snaring and Poaching http://www.elephantdatabase.org/ Maps Created by Lisa Matthies GISCorps Volunteer 2009

  6. GIS Maps African Elephant Database www.elephantdatabase.org

  7. Remote sensing data -Land cover change analysis Landsat Imagery 2003, 2013 Unsupervised Classification - ENVI

  8. Tracking Elephants (FransLanting/National Geographic Stock) Elephant Population has been reduced from 250,000 in 1960s to 25,000 today.

  9. Problem statement In the South Luangwa National Park, located in Zambia, poachers have been decimating the elephant populations, and other wildlife, with the use of snare traps. These snare traps are set and left in the park areas to entrap large game animals. The South Luangwa Conservation Society collects data on the locations of elephant mortalities and poaching activity related to the locations of snares. In an effort to help the conservation and monitoring efforts of the park, you have been tasked with creating a collection of maps detailing the elephant migratory routes, poaching activities, land classifications within the park boundaries, and patrolling routes utilized by the park rangers. Your goal as the project analyst is to create map products and digitally processed imagery to better understand the various land cover areas of the park, and the correlation of these areas to the migratory movements and mortality incidents among the wild elephant populations.

  10. Data sets • GIS Data – • 1) Park boundaries/Study area • 2) Water bodies in Zambia • 3) Established roads in the park • 4) Elephant Mortalities in the following categories – Poached, Natural Mortality, Euthanized, Unknown • 5) Known elephant migratory routes • 6) Patrolled areas • 7) Flight paths of small aerial aircraft in the park • Imagery – • 1) Landsat Imagery – to perform Land Cover Classification • 2) DEM – park elevations

  11. Story board 1) Where are the elephant mortalities and poaching activities the highest within South Luangwa National Park? 2) Which habitat types do elephants prefer and how does this relate to conservation efforts?
