  1. Our Brother’s Keeper Shelter Mission Statement: Our mission is to provide a place to stay and a meal to those without a home in the Big Rapids area through a coalition of church and community members. Our Brother’s Keeper was designed to use a combination of community members and a church organization to provide for the needy and homeless in the Big Rapids community. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work first hand with guests, help run the logistics of the organization, and provide love, hope and support to those staying in the shelter. Integration of Theory: Florence Nightingale’s theory gains perspective on how the environment affects health. By maintaining a healthy environment people are able to heal more quickly. At Our Brother’s Keeper we were able to help maintain a healthy, clean environment and assist in providing nutrition to the homeless population. Evidence Based Knowledge: By using current information about the homeless population, we were able provide caring and understanding support to guests staying at the shelter. “Many people are reduced to homelessness because of poor health, which can rapidly escalate into employment problems, financial difficulties and housing issues with over half of personal bankruptcies in the US resulting from health issues” (National Coalition for the Homeless, 2010). In addition to this, we were able to use knowledge about health and nutrition to encourage good health habits to guests. “Maintaining a healthy diet is difficult in soup kitchens and shelters as meals are usually high in salt, sugars, and starch” (National Health Care for the Homeless Council, 2011). Having a realistic understanding of how people become homeless, an idea of the issues they face, and open mind allows for a more successful volunteer experience.
