  2. Typical Appointments for Assistant Professors in a Land Grant • Research • Teaching • Extension • Appointments often combine research with teaching or extension. • Managing the two or three distinct aspects of your job can be a challenge.

  3. Some Advice for Managing the Juggling Act • Find out what’s expected of you • Do it

  4. Find out what’s expected of you • Ask your colleagues –how to get tenure at your institution • This is an ongoing process • But careful not to be a pest • The market test – how to get tenure anywhere • 2 pubs/year, good teacher ratings, visible extension program with constituents that look to you

  5. Do what’s expected of you (and maybe a little more) • Build on strength • You likely will not have time/capacity to excel at everything • Find common ground in your research/teaching/extension efforts • Easier for some things (research/extension) than others (research/undergrad teaching) • Leverage your work through collaboration • E.g., deliver your research through a colleague’s extension program

  6. Have fun • Remember why you got into this line of work (this is related to my point about doing what your’re good at doing) • Tenure uncertainties are stressful, but can be calmed significantly by • family, friends, exercise, meditation, beer…

  7. Good Luck!
