  1. Architecture for Climate Monitoring from SpaceUpdate for ICG WIGOS Jérôme Lafeuille (OBS/SAT/C/SBOS) Stephan Bojinski (OBS/SAT/SO/SUP) WMO; OBS/SAT (SBOS)

  2. Two actions in the WIGOS Implementation Plan Collaboration 2.1.2: Develop collaboration framework for the Architecture for Climate Monitoring from Space Design, planning and evolution 3.1.2: Develop the Architecture for Climate Monitoring from Space, focusing on 4 GFCS priorities WMO

  3. Strategy towards an Architecture for Climate Monitoring from Space CEOS, CGMS, WMO 2.1.2 Collaboration • Ad-hoc working team established in 2012 • Strategy document published in Feb 2013 • Joint CEOS-CGMS Working Group on Climate approved by CGMS (July 2013) and CEOS (Nov. 2013) • WMO as both CGMS Member and CEOS Associate is an active member of the Joint WG (W. Zhang, J. Lafeuille/S. Bojinski) • First meeting planned on 5-7 March 2014 CEOS: Committee on Earth Observation Satellites CGMS: Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites

  4. 2.1.2 Collaboration (continued) • The ToR of the joint CEOS-CGMS Climate WG include (in summary): • Maintain a view of available Climate Data Records from satellite obs • Foster best use of available data to deliver further CDRs • e.g. through calibration, reprocessing initiatives • Optimize planning of future satellite missions and constellations • Expected outcomes: • Definition/implementation of Climate Monitoring Architecturefor space obs • Review and assessment of CDR generation, compliance to GCOS… • Advice to CEOS and CGMS on response to UNFCCC, IPCC, GFCS

  5. 3.1.2 Design, planning and evolution Conceptual stage: Architecture Pillars with logical representation of data flows and dependencies Traceable to GCOS Guidelines and GCOS Climate Monitoring Principles

  6. WMO contribution adresses both ends: Space Segment analysis building on OSCAR/Space and related assessments Satellite data use scenarios in GFCS priority areas • Identify CGMS missions to support FCDRs and derived ECVs in a sustained manner (with ET/SAT) • Encourage CGMS commitment on these missions • Highlight gaps and prompt actions • Identify user requirements for climate services and infer product requirements (with ET-SUP) • Use case studies in GFCS literature (“Climate ExChange”) • Highlight gaps and prompt actions
