  1. Energy Quotient Jody Paulus Managing Member

  2. About me • Flemish (Belgian) • Lawyer, background in Financial Services • Moved to London, trained 1 year to become energy assessor commercial and public buildings • Worked for largest energy consultancy in Europe (Nr 2 worldwide) M&C Energy Group in Benelux • Moved to SA started Energy Quotient

  3. Energy Quotient • Started 2011 as a general energy efficiency consultancy • Need for Quality energy saving lighting (LED) apparent • Registered as an ESCO with ESKOM, joined SAAES and UE • Conducted extensive research and product testing • Additional training in lighting design, technical aspects of lighting and LED

  4. Services • LED retrofits • Import/Distribution of LED lighting • Design/planning lighting and implementation

  5. What is an LED ? • Light-Emitting Diode • Semiconductor technology like transistors • Semiconductors are foundation of modern electronics • Been around since late 60s • High-brightness LED was demonstrated by Shuji Nakamura of Nichia Corporation in 1994. He also created blue laser diodes, which are used in Blu-ray.

  6. LED advantages • Very efficient • Little heat, UV radiation • Very long lasting (in theory) • Small, allows different form factors • Highly adaptable: colour, spectrum, wavelengths etc

  7. LED disadvantages • Expensive materials • Very high tech, big quality differences especially in CRI, colour consistency and lifetime. • Massive subsidisation in China has led to flood of sub-standard products. • Difficult for laymen to differentiate quality

  8. Why Energy Quotient? • Substantial testing in house • Independent test certificates • Claims backed up by these tests • Branded products so warranties will be honoured • Registered ESCO, can secure ESKOM rebates • Proud to be a member of Unashamedly Ethical

  9. Retrofitting • Replacing lamp/fixture with LED lamp/fixture • EQ LEDs are as good a replica as possible • Realistic life expectations and light outputs. No over exaggerated claims • Not all lights should be changed! • Very good Eskom Rebates, EQ is a registered ESCO in SA • Sectors: Anywhere the lights burn for long periods e.g. hospitality, office, retail, Industrial lighting,...

  10. Import/Distribution • Use for own projects led to distributorships • Top (niche) LED manufacturers from Europe, USA and China • Targets are construction companies, electrical wholesalers etc • Some brands: SORAA, Franklite, Civilight, Solaris,…

  11. Specialty lighting • Agriculture: • Poultry : LEDs with special spectrum reduce energy but also reduce mortality/increase productivity • Greenhouses : LEDs with optimalisedspectrum based on desired growth of root, leaves, fruits reduces energy and cultivation time • Outdoor: Very long lasting highly energy efficient sign or street lighting can be solar powered.

  12. Lighting Design • Trained is specialty software Dialux and Relux • Allows for 3D rendering of lighting • New builds, large retrofits • Can be free if our lights are used or in quotes for large projects Examples
