  2. WAV The most notable sound file format is WAV because it is supported by windows 3.1, 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME, XP and Vista. One minute of sound saved to a WAV file requires 2.5 MB of disk space. WAV is used when audio is put on CDs.

  3. MPEG MPEG has audio extensions such as .mp2, .mpa, .mp3, .mp4. MPEG is primarily a compression algorithm that can be applied to a number of audio of formats. MP3 is mostly used on the internet.

  5. MIDI Musical Information Digital Interface does not store sound waves instead it stores digital representation of notes and note length and if able to load the same instrument if using midi from different sources. It can be easily transposed, played from different instruments and you can synthesize musical notation from it.

  6. Streaming audio Audio sources stream to an internet streaming client and the client puts the audio into a buffer until it can be used, then the client receives audio data, the client player starts reading the data from the buffer and then playing it for example on sound cloud you cannot play a point in the track that hasn’t loaded yet otherwise it will have to pause and buffer because the data is not downloaded.
