(Genesis 25:33) Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn” (Genesis 27:19) Then the lord said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.” (Genesis 31:3)

  5. Jacob’s Life of Wrestling I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. (Genesis 32:10) But you have said, “I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.” (Genesis 32:12) So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not over power him… (Genesis 32:24-25)

  6. Jacob’s Life of Wrestling Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” (Genesis 32:26)

  8. Jacob’s Response to Trouble [Jacob] took [his family] and sent them across the stream. And he sent across whatever he had. Then Jacob was left alone… (Genesis 32:23-24a) • We tend to go “inward” • We tend to “isolate” from people & God

  9. God “Picks a Fight” with Jacob Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. (Genesis 32:24)

  10. God “Picks a Fight” with Jacob Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. (Genesis 32:24) • God is keeping Jacob engaged with Him rather than allowing Jacob to get lost in himself.

  11. God “Picks a Fight” with Jacob A man wrestled with him until daybreak. When he saw that he had not prevailed against [Jacob], he touched the socket of his thigh; so the socket of Jacob’s thigh was dislocated while he wrestled him. Then he said, “Let me go”…But [Jacob] said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” (Genesis 32:24-26)

  12. God’s Goal of Wrestling Jacob Then he said, “Let me go”…But [Jacob] said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” So he said, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” He said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have wrestled with God and with men and have prevailed.” (Genesis 32:26-29)

  13. Results from Wrestling with God • Transformation of Jacob into Israel (Genesis 32:28) • Recognizing of God in a new way (Genesis 32:29-30; 33:20) • A visible change in Jacob (Genesis 32:31) • Trusting in & following God (Genesis 33:17-20)
