  1. COFRET is co-financed by theEuropean Commission DirectorateGeneral for Research & Innovationwithin the 7th Framework Programme www.cofret-project.eu COFRET Carbon Footprint of Freight Transport Washington DC January 2012 Maria Boile CERTh HIT

  2. Introduction • Welcome to the COFRET Project • COFRET is a collaborative research and demonstration project part-funded by the European Commission, which will deliver a methodology for the calculation of the carbon footprint along the full supply chain.  • COFRET Objectives • To establish a complete GHG emission calculation methodology and framework in the context of complex supply chains based on available calculation tools for CO2 emissions • To cover all types of shipments at company level and aggregated level of transport and logistics • To provide a methodology that is applicable for supply chains within the EU as well as in the global context • To embed practical exploitation as a key element of the technical work programme to maximise the eventual

  3. Premise • Many initiatives have emerged that address the issues of measuring and reducing CO2 emissions within various elements of the freight transport supply chain. • These initiatives provide an extremely valuable starting point. However, there are many inconsistencies in approach: • which greenhouse gases are taken into account • which supply chain elements are taken into account • which modes are considered • Therefore a ‘neutral’ approach that aligns the best practice elements is required.

  4. Approach • work with the existing initiatives - close co-operation between the COFRET team and industry stakeholders • develop a comprehensive methodology to be used in in-house and commercial applications • test the methodology in real supply chain applications • work to maximise the eventual uptake of the COFRET methodology

  5. Current Progress • Review of Existing Resources and User Needs • The first stage is now complete: • To review and assess existing carbon footprint calculation methods, tools and databases • To identify user needs, practices and experiences in the context of carbon footprint calculation • To review future technologies and innovations relevant to freight transport carbon footprint calculation

  6. Review of Existing Resources • Reviewed: • 18 methodologies • 38 calculation tools • 12 databases • 34 other resources (research projects, forums, communication channels) • Compiled within COFRET ‘Deliverable 2.1’ : “Existing methods and tools for calculation of carbon footprint of transport and logistics”

  7. User Needs Survey • Consulted with: • > 40 one to one interviews • online survey e-mailed to > 400 valid e-mail recipients and completed by 62 • Analysis completed January 2012

  8. Existing Resources and User Needs Workshop • Held 19th January 2012: • > 30 attendees • detailed discussion and review • outputs feed into methodology development phase

  9. Methodology Development • initial steps now underway • workshop with methodology experts and tool developers scheduled for 15th February 2012 • will continue through to middle of 2012 • subsequent step will investigate incorporation into supply chain management software, and development of a prototype for use in the COFRET case studies

  10. External Liaison • COFRET Advisory Board • meetings to discuss progress and provide guidance on forthcoming actions • review of project outputs • input to workshops • Includes representatives of Conlogic, Connekt, Deutschebahn, DHL, Ewals Cargo Care, Fiege, Kuehne + Nagel, Maersk Line, myclimate, Sainsburys, Swiss and UPM. • Although the Board members provide advice to the COFRET project, the technical content and conclusions of COFRET are those of the project partners and not necessarily endorsed by the Board Members or their employers.

  11. Links to other initiatives • World Economic Forum: Consignment Carbon • Smartway Europe
