  1. Importance of Insurance Coverage for Surrogacy Infertility is a disheartening condition bothering a large number of couples around the globe. It is easy to imagine the trauma they must be going through, as they see the reproductive cycle fail month after month. However, advanced medical techniques have opened new doors of opportunities for such couples and it has now become possible to conquer the biggest of problems with one of these treatments. But most of these treatments are so expensive that they are out of reach of many people. India has come up as a premier medical tourism destination, where a number of healthcare services and treatments, including infertility treatments, are available at half the price, though the quality standards are at par with those, anywhere else in the world. In fact, it can be correctly said as one of the fastest growing health sectors across the globe, with its large number of fertility clinics providing the latest and best infertility services in India at reasonable costs. The success rate of fertility treatment in the country is also considerably high. Moreover the rules and regulations of the country are relaxed so that patients from within as well as other parts of the world can take them up without fearing the legal implications of the procedures involving third parties. When it comes to surrogacy arrangements, Intended Parents and surrogates are often focused on making a match and starting the fertility treatments; however the issue of proper insurance coverage is perhaps the single most important element in ensuring that parties have exercised proper care in ensuring that their position in a surrogacy arrangement is protected whether they are an Intended Parent or Surrogate. This issue, because it may involve high costs is sometimes downplayed by agencies and attorneys, the very professionals that Intended Parents and Surrogates rely upon for expertise and advice. There is also a great deal of misinformation whether

  2. surrogacy is covered by insurance? Some internet sites advise, wrongly, that while insurance may not cover the costs of infertility, pregnancy is another matter. Heeding such advice, particularly when this is something that one would like to hear may cost both the Intended Parents and the Surrogate dearly down the road. So, what should Intended Parents and Surrogates watch for when it comes to insurance? Here are the main dos and don'ts of insurance: 1.Don't assume that because the insurance worked for another surrogate arrangement it will work this time. Insurance policies on coverage change and sometimes rapidly! 2.Don't assume that because coverage with a particular carrier covers surrogacy in one state, it will work in another. The same carrier may have different policies in different states. 3.Do read the policy and if there is surrogacy exclusion, believe it! 4.Don't think that you can avoid mentioning there is a surrogacy arrangement in place. You don't want to be denied coverage by the insurance company for not correctly informing them or worse yet, of falsifying insurance documents or worse yet defending against insurance fraud! 5.Do seek expert advice from a professional well versed in insurance matters for surrogacy arrangements. 6.Do your homework. Some states offer better insurance coverage options than others. 7.Do understand that there are options: if your surrogate does not have insurance and there are no viable private insurance plans that will cover surrogacy, you can opt for special surrogacy plan coverage. 8.Do understand that a clause in a contract that the Intended Parents will pay for all medical bills related to the pregnancy is just a clause and does not guarantee the Surrogate that the bills will be paid before creditors are knocking nor help Intended Parents when they are sued by a Surrogate who is responsible for the medical bills of her pregnancy. Having a child through a surrogacy arrangement is expensive and insurance can be a large part of the expense but don't let a shortcut turn a dream into a nightmare of medical bills.
