  1. Resource File – Teaching Materials in the Categories of Numeracy/Mathematics Grace Nwosu Assistant Professor, Curriculum and Instruction

  2. Plenty of Pies • This material will be used to teach a number of things – Counting, comparisons of numbers (which is less or more than), Number recognition. At the end of the problem solving exercise the children will color the pictures with their real life colors.

  3. Ready For School • The material is for dual purposes: It is for the teaching of patterns and numbers. Children solve the pattern problem after the teacher has taught them the concept of pattern with examples.

  4. Safari Sums • The material is appropriate for children in their late kindergarten class. Now the sign of addition has been introduced and children are counting & recognizing numbers beyond 50. The teacher will do a sample working with the children. The students will work the rest of the problems on the sheet.

  5. Fall Leaves • Teacher asks students to bring to school fall leaves. She talks about the leaves as signs of fall, why they change color. She displays the leaves children brought to school. She asks children to come in groups of three to feel the texture of the leaves. After that, the whole class with the teacher will sort the leaves by color and graph them. The key math concepts are sorting, graphing, counting and numbers.

  6. Loopy Math • This material is for the math concepts which are sorting, counting, number recognition, writing of numbers and graphing. The teacher gives each child an adult hand full of fruit loops. She tells them to sort and write the answers in the worksheet according to colors. First she models for them before the children work on the problem. At the end of the math section, children will be told to eat their share of the fruit loops.

  7. Slithering Patterns • This material is for teaching a math concept pattern. This material can be used across subjects for instance Language Arts, Art, etc. The teacher models for the children on how to make patterns with color cubes or links. On the snake paper, she colors the snake in patterns as a sample for the children. The children color theirs following teacher’s example.

  8. Counting the Pumpkins • The material is for number recognition, counting and writing or pasting. It also helps to teach matching concepts in math.

  9. Problem Solving This kit may be used to assess problem solving skills.

  10. Shapes Counting • These materials will be used for sorting, numbering, counting, and graphing in the early childhood classroom.

  11. Stacking • The material will be useful in teaching preschoolers as well as children with special needs on numbers, counting, stacking skills, connecting skills.

  12. Color, Sort and Match! • These pieces may be used to assess the following areas: • Color recognition • Shape recognition • Sorting skills • Matching skills • Fine motors skills

  13. Counting • These flash cards may be used to assess the following areas: • Counting skills • Color skills

  14. Numbers • This apparatus may be used to assess the following areas: • Game skills • Matching skills • Alphabet skills • Color skills • Puzzle skills

  15. Number Skills The kit may be used to assess basic math skills such as adding, subtracting and counting.
