  2. > Presentation Overview • Introduction to Jorum • What it is and how it came about • What it does and what it contains • Examples of UK learning materials • Understanding change; looking to the future • Changing environment • Increasing confidence in ‘open’ model • Opportunities and challenges in the OER agenda • Planning an effective national service • New services: going ‘open’ • JorumOpen / JorumEducationUK • Support for existing & licensed material • JorumPlus Overview Introduction Background Change Planning

  3. National Data Centres research, learning & teaching in UK universities & colleges NDCs acting as two platforms for network-level services as part of JISC Integrated Information Environment UK Research Councils Content, Tools & Infrastructure JISC Sub-Committees JISC Collections UK funding councils for HE & FE

  4. jorum \ 'jo-r-*m, 'jo.r-\ n [perhaps from Joram “ … brought with him vessels of silver" (2 Samuel 8:10 - AV)] : a large drinking vesselor its contents Brewers Phrase & Fable hypertext Webster Interface

  5. how Jorum came about • began as ‘keep-safe’ for publicly-funded outputs and content developed in projects at institutions • a support project within Exchange for Learning (X4L) Programme • a ‘service in development’ • an early ‘deliverable’ won a prize! Overview Introduction Background Change Planning

  6. how Jorum came about • began as ‘keep-safe’ for publicly-funded outputs and content developed in projects at institutions • a support service within X4L Programme • re-used and re-purposed as JISC national repository • to promote sharing, reuse and repurposing of learning materials between institutions • had to tackle IPR and legal issues • HEFCE decided to be the Sub-Licensor • successfully launched two user services in 2005/6 • Jorum Contributor - putting stuff in • Jorum User- getting stuff out Overview Introduction Background Change Planning

  7. Jorum is therefore … Overview Introduction Background Change Planning … a bowl, a drinking vessel (or its contents) to be shared … an online repository of learning materials • for deployment within institution VLEs • Virtual Learning Environments • and within teaching practice Uses open standards Jorum uses IMS Content Packages and IEEE LOM metadata for the content, so that the material can be re-used and re-purposed Jorum uses an application of IntraLibrary (from Intrallect)

  8. Jorum is therefore … Overview Introduction Background Change Planning also a catalyst for effective collaboration between: • learning technologists & tutors • across universities and colleges • JISC and communities of use it serves • across 3 JISC sub-committees • Learning & Teaching • Integrated Information Environment • Content & Services • two JISC national data centres, EDINA & Mimas • working closely as a team with Centre for Educational Technology & Interoperability Standards (CETIS)

  9. Jorum Today, as national repository for learning materials ‘getting content out’ ‘putting content in’ Jorum Contributor Jorum User ‘keep-safe’ = Two Services + ‘Keep-safe’ mandate + Jorum R&D

  10. A variety of content Single files Content Packages / Learning Objects Virtual Objects Text documents, Spread Sheets, PowerPoints, Images, Video, Audio, Flash Animations Bundling learning resources together with metadata. Content can be moved between programs, facilitating easier delivery, reuse and sharing of materials. Jorum can catalogue and point to resources stored elsewhere (e.g. a licensed service at EDINA, Mimas or elsewhere)

  11. Statistics Jorum Contributor Jorum User

  12. Showcase Some examples

  13. Social Care Institute for Excellence • Consistent Navigation • Rich interactive content • Accessible video from respected practitioners and experts

  14. Reusable Learning Objects (RLOs) • Adaptable templates • Simple to rebrand and repurpose • Promotion of community aspect • This resource shows how Learning Styles differ between students

  15. E Studio – University of Wolverhampton • Part of X4L Phase 1; multi-disciplinary consortium • Repurpose JISC online resources for use in e-learning • 6 ‘Arts and Design’ Resources (incl. photo essay) • Explore their use within a VLE

  16. REHASH – University of London, St Georges REHASH (Repurposing Existing Healthcare Assets to Share) 60 high quality medical and healthcare resources University of London, St Georges

  17. REALM – Swansea College Consortium of 4 institutions in the Swansea area 5 subject areas 115 Learning Objects either completed or near completion Used different sources for the materials to including: NLN Materials, DART, UK Data Archive and StarUK.

  18. Note-taking – University of Stirling http://repository.jorum.ac.uk/intralibrary/IntraLibrary?command=open-preview&learning_object_key=i229806n32444t

  19. 'North West Content Exchange' – North Trafford College Group of 26 institutions in the North West Funded through the RSC NW Range of subject areas covered This resource shows how to manipulate formulae

  20. The Changing Agenda • Jorum pre-dates emergence of ‘open access’ & Institutional Repositories: • Open agenda + Creative Commons • Jorum now itself being re-purposed • for ‘open sharing’ • as a platform, and ‘showcase’ • for UK commitment to OER (Open Educational Resources) Overview Introduction Background Change Planning

  21. JISC national repository for learning • To act as a place where JISC-funded content can be stored, managed and made available • To stand as “a national statement of the importance of creating interoperable, sustainable materials” • To promote sharing, reuse and repurposing of learning materials between institutions Aims Overview Introduction Background Change Planning moving Jorum into mainstream of teachingand learning

  22. Planning an effective service: time to ‘open-up’ • Devising three new licensing regimes • JorumOpen • for content when depositors who are willing and able to share content ‘free2web’ • Open Educational Resources, OpenLearn • JorumEducationUK • for content when depositors who wish or have to share (only) within the UK academic domain • JorumPlus • for content with third-party licensed material, or for more limited authorisation • Initial licensing regime was risk-averse, with HEFCE licence required for deposit and for use. • In new regimes we plan to have the depositor license the user directly. Overview Introduction Background Change Planning

  23. Planning to ‘open-up’ • to be able to support open content initiatives • to take forward preservation strategy • to be a showcase • for learning and teaching resources produced by UK FE and HE institutions. • Opportunity to gain leverage from • Web 2.0 • Merlot • work done in JISC RepositoryNet • e.g. the Depot • open source software • consider existing software ‘fit-for-purpose’ • But need assurance on scaling for free2web use Overview Introduction Background Change Planning
