  3. KKK • Intended to scare African Americans • Also targeted Catholics, Jews, immigrants • Hired Edward Clarke and Elizabeth Taylor as public relations managers (Recruiters) for KKK • Membership SKYROCKETED (Estimated 4 Million Members in the 1920’s)

Fundamentalist Movement • Bible is the TRUTH AND WITHOUT ERRORS • Rejected theory of evolution (Darwin) • Believe in creationism: God created world • Scopes Trial: John Scopes taught the theory of Evolution • Found guilty and fined $100 dollars • Butler Act: Banned teachers from teaching the theory of evolution

Harlem Renaissance • Great migration (WWI – the 1920’s) – African Americans moved North to avoid segregation • Environment of artistic development, racial pride, a sense of community, and political organization • Politics: • As numbers increased in the North, so did their political power in the voting bloc • Legally they battled lynching
