  2. The Root of the Conflict? • Two ethnic groups, the Tutsi’s and the Hutu’s are fighting for power. • Hutu’s engage in ethnic cleansing upon the Tutsi’s in order to gain ethnic and political power.

  3. What Form Does This Conflict Take? • Rape • Violence • Civilian Casualties • War • Ethnic Cleansing • 90% of Casualties were due to non-combat scenarios • Malnutrition • Pneumonia • Diarrhea

  4. What is the Spatial Extent of this Conflict • Remarked as the “African World War” • Involved 9 African nations and 20 armed groups

  5. How Long was the Conflict • First Congo War • 1996 - 1997 • Second Congo War • 1998 – 2003 • (Aftermath affected people well into 2008)

  6. How Many People Were Affected? • First Congo War • 800,000 dead • 222,000 missing • Second Congo War • 5.4 million people • Statistics include: Men, women, and children

  7. It’s Global, Regional, and Local Presence • Conflict was specific to certain provinces and locales (I.E. The Democratic Republic of the Congo & Rwanda). • Fragility of the state has allowed continued violence and human rights abuses. • Rwanda and Ugandan backing of rebels
