Overview • The World Bank was created for countries needing financial and technical aid around the world. • It was created after World War Two ended. • The bank is located in Washington, D.C. • The United States controls one-third of the World Bank because they provided one-third of the money. Therefore many of the positions were held by Americans. • The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) is known as the World Bank.

  3. Roles and Responsibilities • The bank would guarantee repayment if a loan was made by a private institution. (Act like an insurance company) • To encourage the reconstruction and development of member nations, and to enhance the development of international trade. • Is a form of credit used to countries that do not have very good ratings at the time, but they must have some kind of promising future. • Offers technical recourses to developing countries. • The IBRD focuses on middle income and countries that have sound credits and whose futures were promising. • International Development Association (IDA) focuses on the poorest countries in all the world. • World bank provides low-interest loans, interest-free credits and grants to developing countries for a wide selection of purposes that include investments in education, health, public administration, infrastructure, financial and private sector development, agriculture, and environmental and natural resource management.

  4. Financial Base • One third of the currency to the bank is in U.S dollars. • It is the financial base for a large number of countries that are developing or under reconstruction. • The bank is owned by over 185 countries with the same plan of bring poverty to a minimum and all support in some way to the cause.

  5. Global Impact • The bank was set up to provide affordable aid to countries. But some countries have a enormous dept in their country that their economies cannot fix. • Helped many countries around the word to regain many of the essential needs some examples will follow in the next few slides

  6. Tanzania: -Credited to the private sector increased 250% In the last 6 years.

  7. -In the poorest countries. 60,000 km of roads built, rebuilt, or maintained in last 5 years.

  8. Senegal: -About 1.6 million people have gained access to safe water in urban areas.

  9. China -Over 3.8 million hectares of forests planted.

  10. Vietnam: Electricity for 90% percent of rural areas in 2005, up from 50% in 1996.

  11. Rwanda HIV testing for 500,000 people and 12 million condoms gave out.

  12. Key Events • The end of World War Two at the Bretton Woods Conference the creation of the World Bank happened. The Bretton Woods Conference was a gathering of international monetary and financial order after the conclusion ofWorld War Two. • It’s first loan of $250 million was in France in 1947 for post war reconstruction. • The World Bank has lent and given grants and credits worth $400 billion.
