  1. MINISTRY IN THE CHURCH OF ACTS Penge Baptist Church 20th June 2010

  2. The New Testament purposes • Evangelism • Worship • Discipleship • Ministry • Community

  3. What’s ministry? • Showing God’s love by addressing people’s needs • Ephesians 4:12 “to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up” • Reaching out in love

  4. Kids’ football

  5. Team play

  6. Team play in the church of Acts • (1) Humble service like defenders“the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word”. (Acts 6:2-4)

  7. (2) Encouraging the team like Barnabas “When [Paul] came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus. So Saul stayed with them” (Acts 9:26)

  8. (3) Unselfish play for the sake of others: “selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need” (Acts 2:45) “There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.” (Acts 4:34-35)

  9. Dramatic “goals” for the kingdom:“When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong.” (Acts 3:3-7)

  10. The divine aspect of ministry • A clearer “hand of God”! • Who is the manager?

  11. Ministry under the management of the Holy Spirit • “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” (1 Corinthians 12:4-7)

  12. One team in Christ • “Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us.” (Romans 12:4-5)

  13. A song for “Christ’s Body United” He has no hands but our hands To do his work today He has no feet but our feet To lead men in his way He has no voice but our voice To tell men how he died He has no help but our help To lead them to his side.

  14. Some of the Spiritual Gifts • “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.” (Romans 12:6-8)

  15. The church of today?
