Population & Vital Statistics 2006 Land Area (sq. miles)  - 188 Total Population – 19,907 Below 15 yrs. old – 5,152 16 to 64 yrs. old – 13,619 65 and over – 1,136 Non- Palauans - 5,469 Population Density (per/sq. mi.) Palau-116 Koror  - 1,811 Number of States- 16 Annual Population Growth - 1.3%

  3. TB Disease Rates • Palau – Reported TB • Incidence for 2007 – 60 cases/100,000 pop* • Prevalence for 2007 – 71 cases/100,000 pop* • Incidence for 2009 – 100 cases/100,000 pop** • Prevalence for 2009 – 105 cases/100,00 pop** • 2010 Jan to June already confirmed 11 cases

  4. Increased need for DOTS Workers • Increased number of cases • Improved contact investigation result in increasing # of client on LTBI treatment who often needs to be on DOTS • Contact investigation and follow-up evaluation itself requires staff time

  5. GF TB funds support DOTS • Decision made to train DOTS Workers • Training Advisory Committee Formed • Hired a retired TB Nurse to be trainer • Team Developed Curriculum for 6 weeks • Recruit Trainee’s • Selected 18 trainee’s • Training started, 15 of graduates • Cross training at TB Center, Laboratory, Pharmacy, and Community Health nursing post (rotate 2 months at each post)

  6. DOTS Workers Training • Provided additional manpower to other area’s in MOH • DOTS workers involved in TB work at current assigned post • Four assigned to TB Center and conduct DOTS daily • Five assigned in Community Health Post and assist with DOTs in remote areas • All trained DOTS Workers assist with Contact Investigation, Case Management Reviews, Patient and Community Education

  7. Future Plans • DOTS are continually evaluated for potential increased role in TB Care Management • They provide additional support for all the assigned post. • This project is evidence provide strong support for local training to build Human Resource for Health Care
