  2. Check your machines (1) • There are 4 types of notebook computers in PCMS: • IBM thinkpad 770 (PII266+64M RAM+8G HD) • IBM thinkpad 600 (PII233+64M RAM+3G HD) • IBM thinkpad 380 (P233+64M RAM+4G HD) • Asus 7400 (PII300+64M RAM+4G HD)

  3. Check your machines (2) • For each type of machine: • Locate the followings: • On/Off button, Power-in, Battery, Floppy drive and CD-Rom drive • Network port, Modem port, Infrared Port, USB port, VGA port, LPT port, COM port, Audio-in port and Audio-out port • Check the following: • CPU type, RAM and harddisk capacity

  4. Daily Operation (in school) • Learn how to: • Connect and send signals to LCD projector • find one external MM-VGA cable • connect the cable between your notebook and the projector VGA-in port • switch the display signal out • Connect and send signals to speakers • find one external 1to2-Audio cable • connect the cable to your Audio-out port

  5. Daily Operation (in school) • Learn how to: • Connect to the PC-Intranet • find a patching MM network cable • connect your notebook to the network port • if necessary, logout/login again (登出/登入)with username=user and nil password • confirm whether you get connected by running programs such as winipcfg (9x), ipconfig (NT) and ping orcheck the content of network neighborhood (網絡上的芳鄰)

  6. Daily Operation (in school) • Learn how to: • Access the Internet and web resources • get connected to the Intranet • start any browser and check the proxy settings: 172.16.xxx.xxx:8080 (pcproxy) • do anything else...

  7. Daily Operation (at home) • Learn how to: • Connect to printer • (a) through Infrared port • select corresponding printing port • place your notebook behind the printer with eye of sight between two Infrared ports • (b) through LPT port and a printer cable

  8. Daily Operation (at home) • Learn how to: • Access the Internet • get connected to schoolnet free dial up services (pre-installed) with your personal account (e.g. pc-cwt) and any other ISP using dial-up network (撥號網絡) • start any browser and check the proxy settings: proxy.hkcampus.net :8087 • Notes: how to keep two sets of proxy info in one machine?

  9. Daily Operation (at home) • Learn how to: • Access the web resources of PCMS • In PCMS, all servers starts with 172.16.x.x which we called virtual Ips, that is, you cannot use such URL outside • Wherever outside PCMS, the servers are re-map as 210.176.x.x

  10. A good file systems • Where should you store your files? •  data-disk (usually D:) of your notebook •  floppy disk, ZIP disk and CD-ROM •  schoolteam personal folder •  schoolnet (cybercampus) personal folder •  \\Pcms_fileserver\resources\… •  data-disk of other desktop machines • How about test papers and exam papers? • A private place!

  11. File sharing • Share out files or devices from your machine • open file explorer(檔案總管) • select the file, folder or device you want to share out from your machine • right-click the object and choose resources sharing (資源分享) and finish the message box with appropriate share-name, share-mode and password (if necessary) • check whether you can see a share symbol behind the shared objects

  12. File sharing • Access to shared files or devices (1) • open file explorer(檔案總管)or network neighborhood (網絡上的芳鄰) • select the appropriate network group and then machine you want to access, sometimes you have to key in passwords • in NT client, if the password doesn’t match, you can type in another username + password; in Win9x client, you can only type in another password for the login username; sometimes, you have to logout/login with appropriate username again.

  13. File sharing • Access to shared files or devices (2) • each shared object in any machine can have its own set of passwords (for read-mode and for read/write-mode) • Beware: when you access a shared objects in win9x client, it always asks whether you want to save up the password; if you checked the button, any further access will NOT ask for password again! • Beware: when you finished your work, you must logout since all passwords you typed in are still valid until the end of current session

  14. Add a new network printer • connect to the PC-Intranet • run SETUP (設定)PRINTER (印表機)from the start menu • execute ADD NEW PRINTER(新增印表機) and choose add network printer and finish all message boxes • pick up the testing page from the newly added network printer to verify whether it is correctly added

  15. Our final recommendation • You must (1) • use C: to install programs and D: to store data; when you get a system crash, we will format the C: and restore the backup image for you. Anything in C: will be destroyed! • Backup your data disk (D:) periodically by either saving it in CR-ROM or ZIP drive. Some system crash may destroy the whole disk. Timed-backup is a must.

  16. Our final recommendation • You must (2) • report to IT-committee when the machine is out of order and have any problem. • bring it back for annual stock checking at the end of each academic year and resign a loan form at the start of each academic year. • return to IT-committee when you are leaving Puiching. • make 100% use of it so bring it back home if necessary!
