  1. Jan Astalos -astalos.ui@savba.sk Institute of Informatics Slovak Academy of Sciences The II SAS Testbed Site

  2. Motivation and Objectives • Motivation for the involvement in Grid Testbeds • II SAS participation in CrossGrid application development – Task 1.2 • Virtual Organization for Flood Forecasting • Objectives: • Obtain know-how on Grid technologies • Prepare for national Grid projects • Provide support and infrastructure for: • Development and testing of applications related to flood forecasting • Establishment of VO for Flood Forecasting

  3. Funding • II SAS Testbed site funding: • Equipment • CrossGrid, II SAS • Networking • National project SANET 2 – 1Gbps backbone connected to GÉANT by 155Mbps. • Man power • CrossGrid, II SAS • National projects are being prepared

  4. Current Grid Activities • Evaluation of the Globus toolkit and DataGrid middleware • Setup of Certification Authority for national Grid activities • Implementation of: • CrossGrid testbed site at II SAS • HTC Condor pool with 25 workstations at Technical University of Kosice • will be made available for CrossGrid applications developed at II SAS

  5. Networking in Slovakia • Slovak academic provider is SANET (Slovak Academic NETwork) • Project SANET 2 – 1Gbps backbone connecting academic organisations in Slovakia • GÉANT connectivity – 155Mbps from 2.5Gbps • Current usage about 20% • Total international connectivity – 465Mbps

  6. II SAS Networking • 100Mbps optical connection to the Slovak Academy of Sciences Computing Center(SANET node) • Switched 100Mbps link to CrossGrid testbed site equipment • No bandwith allocation at the moment • Depends on the specific requirements of the applications

  7. Computing Infrastructure • Beowulf class HPC Cluster – CE for CrossGrid testbed site • Front-end: • dual PIII 550MHz, 512MB RAM, 40GB SCSI disk • Computing nodes: • 16 Pentium 4, 1.8GHz diskless PC, 256MB RAM • Network interconnection: • 24 port 100Mbps switch with 1Gbps link to front-end • Mandrake Linux 8.1 • Resource management: PBS Pro • Soon: HTC Condor pool with idle workstations

  8. Additional Grid Resources • Storage Element and web portal of VO for Flood Forecasting • Pentium 233MHz, 128MB RAM, 40GB IDE disk • Certification Authority signing machine • Pentium 233MHz, 64MB RAM, 3.2GB disk • Web server for CA's homepage • SUN SparkStation 20, Solaris 2.51, Apache • UPS

  9. II SAS Testbed Setup Slovak Academy of Sciences Computing Center UPS Web Server Ethernet Switch II SAS Ethernet Switch SANET Router Slovak Academic Network Storage Element and VO Portal FW CA machine HPC Cluster Front-end UPS Ethernet Switch Computing Node Computing Node

  10. Human Resources • People involved in CrossGrid project: • 3 computer scientists, 2 PhD students • Mainly in WP1 “CrossGrid Application Development” - Task 1.2 • In WP4 – Task 4.1: • CrossGrid testbed site setup and maintenance • Help with Grid technologies to the other team members and VO participants.
