  2. What is NCVPS? • “Virtual learning” means registered students can take classes using their own computers over the internet. • Student uses email, instant messaging, and online chat forums to interact with their teachers and classmates.

  3. Information about NCVPS • Began June 2007 • Purpose is to provide courses students are unable to take at their local school • Non diploma granting program but students earn high school credit for all courses completed with a D or better • Courses taught by a certified content area teacher • Courses are taught through the Blackboard Course Management System

  4. What is required to be successful in a NCVPS course? • Strong reading and comprehension skills • Ability to express thoughts and ideas in writing • Proficient in monitoring their own progress, keeping up with assignments, and meeting deadlines.

  5. What is required to be successful in a NCVPS course? • Able to devote a significant amount of time to studying and completing assignments • About 2 hours per day • Reliable internet access • Knowledge of email, instant messaging and online chat

  6. Responsibility of DDMS • Verify that student selected courses are appropriate based on academic performance and history • Ensure students are enrolled in courses that meet their educational needs • Register students for courses • Administer any State mandated or other standardized tests

  7. Middle School Course Selection • Students are eligible to take English, Social Studies, Science, Math, and/or Foreign Language • The course must provide opportunities not currently available to students at DDMS • Students enrolled in a full school day may take one online course during the school year if not offered at DDMS • Rising 9th grade students must secure high school permission.

  8. Instructional Resources • DDMS is responsible for providing students with a WCPSS adopted textbook • Students are responsible for acquiring a non WCPSS adopted textbook • Students are responsible for additional resources which are required by the NCVPS instructor

  9. Grading and Withdrawal • Grades reflect mastery of content objectives, as outlined by the NC Standard Course of Study • Grading scale and grade calculation are consistent with WCPSS practices. • A student who withdrawals after the withdrawal deadline will receive a failure (WF) and it will be noted on transcript

  10. Course Enrollment • Students will complete a WCPSS Dual Enrollment form and submit it to the Guidance department • Principal approves course(s) • Distant Learning Advisor (DLA) will register student in approved course(s) • DLA will contact student once registration is complete

  11. Other Virtual Course Providers • Request for any virtual course must have prior written approval by the principal • Complete Dual Enrollment form
