Preliminary HPMT tests • DEP PP0350G • Discharging problem: partly solved • Pre-amp selection: partly solved • Signals observed from radioactivity source using a NaI detector • Direct communication with DEP established • Personnel: • Electronics engineer, technician, postdoc (Vitaly Kovaltchouk)

  3. HPMT Testing Chores • Need to perfect the electronic circuit • Fast charge pre-amp • Suitable pulse shaper • HV-rated cables • Communicate with DEP • Modify the detector design • Transfer knowledge • Bench tests • Operate with Flasher • Operate with Cosmic Rays

  4. HPMT Geometry (10 PMTs)? Tough-cookie design! Solution: DEP redesigns the electronics housing 10 HPMTs per side = 1000 PMTs ($2.5M)

  5. Readout & Geometry Issues • Optimize area reduction (4:1) • Light guides and Winston Cones • HPMTs must be staggered for clearance • No. of HPMTs must be settled • GUIDEIT MC simulations required • Fiber-to-fiber coupling & standard PMTs • VLPCs • Good neighbor policy: • Solenoid • Drift chambers

  6. SciFi Tests • First round of cosmic ray and TRIUMF tests completed;good results • Analysis: • Extract index of refraction • Improve timing resolution in software • Look at particle ID • Compare results with cosmic ray tests • Order Kuraray multi-clad fibers and test • Repeat cosmic-ray measurements • Begin prototype construction
