  1. Heart Rate Monitors in Physical Education

  2. What is a heart rate monitor? A device that records your heart rate when at rest and during exercise.

  3. Heart Rate Monitor watch Worn on wrist – gives real time information about your heart rate.

  4. Transmitter Worn on the body at the lower chest– sends information about your heart rate to the watch (receiver).

  5. Monitor Strap Holds the transmitter on the body. Each student will have their own personal strap to wear during class.

  6. Why heart rate monitors in physical education classes?

  7. Physical education programs are shifting their focus from sports/skills base to that of wellness and life time fitness. In our PE program, every third class will focus on some aspect of fitness.

  8. The monitors will provide real time information to the students about how efficiently they are exercising. This will be an invaluable tool for us to help them better understand the relationship between the heart and aerobic exercise.

  9. Charts can be created to show students their results.

  10. Post Exercise Care • To keep your HM in top working order. Please follow these simple steps. • Wash the transmitter with a mild soap and water solution. • Rinse the transmitter with clean water. • Dry the transmitter before storing as this will help to extend the life of the battery. • The elastic strap can be machine washed in cold water with laundry detergent, and then hung up to dry.

  11. All grades will be using heart rate monitors during specific PE classes. They have been trained or will be trained on proper use and care of the watch and transmitter. The strap, as well as the PE tee shirt, should be laundered every so often.(washing instructions are on the previous slide) Please be sure to check in with your child if you notice that their PE shirt has not gone through the wash in a while.
