  3. Form of Writing: Definition Poetry Definition Poetry: • defines a concept or concrete object • uses metaphors and imagery • Paints a picture for the reader • generally uses free verse format

  8. Practice Activity • As a class, we are going to complete a graphic organizer. • Topic: Love • Use metaphors and similes to define or describe what love “means” or “is” to you.

  9. Assessment Activity • Independently, complete the graphic organizer using a topic of your choice. • Remember to focus on getting ideas down, not complete sentences.

  11. Form of Writing: Definition Poetry • Use metaphors and similes from graphic organizer to create your definition poem. • Define or describe your topic by beginning each line with the topic and then the word “is.” For ex.: Sad is…., Hungry is…., Crazy is….

  12. Stage of Writing: Drafting • Take ideas from graphic organizer and put into sentences • Skip lines to leave room for revisions later. Place an X on every other line. • Clearly label “draft” at the top of your paper • Neatness and spelling are not important

  16. Assessment Activity • Draft your own graphic organizer by forming your thoughts into complete sentences. • Remember to skip lines, write an X on every other line. • Do not to focus on spelling or punctuation, focus on getting the content down.
