Throwing: The process of shaping plastic clay on the potter’s wheel. • Centering: The process of applying pressure to a lump of clay on a spinning wheel head to position it for even rotation. • Dome: The result of successfully centering clay on the wheel. • Collaring: Squeezing the upper part of a thrown form as it rotates on the wheel in order to decrease the size of the diameter. • Trimming: The process of refining a leather-hard shape with cutting tools. Week 2:

Pulling: Stroking plastic clay with the hand to shape handles for a pot. • Armature: A support or frame used to support a weak point in a sculpture. • Bone Dry: Stage of drying when moisture in the clay body has evaporated so the clay surface no longer feels cold. • Leather Hard: The stage between plastic and bone dry when clay has dried, but may still be carved or joined to other pieces. • Lip: The rim opening of a pot. Week 4:

Additive:  Building up or adding to in order to create a form. • Subtractive:  Taking away or carving from in order to create a form. • Assemblage: Creating sculpture by combining many elements—especially found objects—into a complete work of art. • Mobile: A balanced arrangement of thin rods or stiff wires with objects suspended from them. • Relief: A sculpture in which the forms project from a flat background.
