  1. STEM TEACHER INDUSTRIAL PLACEMENT

What did the placement involve? • Maydown Precision Engineering kindly agreed to facilitate me on my placement from 1st - 4th June 2009. • The placement involved shadowing different job roles within the company to gain an oversight into the production process and how the products were manufactured by MPE. • The placement consisted of a 4 day placement starting at 7.45 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Each day was spent with a different department within the company.

  3. MAYDOWN PRECISION ENGINEERING Customers included: AAA airspace, Bombardier Aerospace, Patria, AIDC, Eaton and CESA. MPE established in 1985 Company has been awarded Investors in people accreditation. Supplies machined components & assemblies for aerospace industry. Background information on company Company has 40+ CNC machine tools Situated at Maydown Industrial estate Londonderry on 12,000 sq m manufacturing facility. 110 Employs

  4. Outline of Placement Day one • Introduction / History of company. • Health & Safety policy of company • Tour of shop floor • Shadowing of CNC operator on CNC 5 Axis milling machine.

  5. Outline of Placement Day two • Shadowing of Quality control / Finishing department • CMM Machine – Co-ordinate measure machine • Internal audit / calibration checks.

  6. Outline of Placement Day Three • Shadowing of Programming engineer in programming department • CAD package – MasterCAM • Industrial Laser Cutter

  7. Outline of Placement Day four • Shadowing of engineer in Engineering Manufacturing department • Material planning • Storing of programmes

  8. What resources have I brought back to school? • A’ Level engineering resources • Contact made between the school and company so an educational visit to the company can take place next year. • Calibration tools given to the school by the company to check accuracy of measuring tools. • Case studies on female engineers to encourage more girls to study engineering & Technology at GCSE level. • PowerPoint on company can be used in connection with educational visit. • Health & Safety information in industry • Established a link with the Northern Ireland Engineering Training council.

What's Next? • As a result of the placement I have developed a scheme of work focusing on careers. • Year 10 pupils will investigate the different careers within industry such as engineering and technology and design. • The pupils will be given the opportunity to visit Maydown Precision Engineering and view first hand the range of job opportunities within the engineering industry. • I will be working closely with the school careers department and FOSEC to develop a careers day to be held in the Technology and Design Department in February 2010. This careers day will inform year 10, GCSE and A’ Level students on STEM subjects and career and job opportunities and further education as a result of studying a STEM subject.

How did experience impact on own personal development? • As a result of the placement it has enable me to gain an insight into industry as I have only experience of working in a school environment. • I have gained an insight into the machinery and tools used in industry which are introduced in school. • I have developed my knowledge of CNC operation, skills required and methods used to set up machinery. • Gained insight into checking measuring tools, calibration. • Introduction to new machinery used to check accuracy and tolerances. • Industrial placement has enabled me to develop my delivery of careers advice for students.

High points of the week • Being given the opportunity to observe high tech machinery such as the 5 axis milling machine and laser cutter. • Involvement of quality control testing and observation of CMM system. • Gaining knowledge and insight into programming. • Finding out that the CAD package we use in school is a good package to learn CAD and prepares pupils for industrial CAD. • Building up links with company. • Established a link with N.I engineering training council.

  12. Low points of the week • No safety clothing provided by the company and I had to leave placement and buy safety boots. • The working conditions were very warm as I was working with a CNC operator in 32 degree heat. • Work conditions very different from school facilities, no staffroom, canteen and toilets very unhygienic.
