  2. And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Man without Christ Ephesians 2:1-2

  3. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. Man without Christ Ephesians 2:3

  4. Man without Christ • Dead in sin (Ephesians 2:1). • Children of wrath (Ephesians 2:3). • Slaves of sin (Romans 6:20). • In Adam (1 Corinthians 15:22).

  5. Sin is so much a part of the being of man that it can be described as “flesh.” Man without Christ

  6. How do we get there from here? Man without Christ Man in Christ

  7. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)… (Ephesians 2:4-5). Man in Christ

  8. …and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 2:6-7). Man in Christ

  9. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. tou/to – neuter singular ca,riti, – feminine singular sesw|sme, noi– masculine plural participle pi,stewj – feminine singular

  10. Ephesians 2:8-10 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

  11. 1 Corinthians Practical Lessons on Unity

  12. Corinth

  13. Corinth • A smelting pot of many peoples. • Pagan cults. • Immorality. • Church plagued by division. • Divorce • Trend to glorify the scientific and philosophical and to ridicule the spiritual. • The role of men and women in the church. • Questions of the uses and misuses of the spiritual gifts.

  14. 1 Corinthians 1:10-11 10 Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree, and there be no divisions among you, but you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For I have been informed concerning you, my brethren, by Chloe's people, that there are quarrels among you.

  15. Chapters 7-10 Chapters 11-16 Questions Errors • Single & Married • Meat & Idols • Women & Worship • Lord’s Supper • Gifts • Resurrection Chapters 1-6 • Divisions • Need for Unity • Necessary • Divisions Unity

  16. Christians in Corinth Those who felt it was okay to eat They did not eat, but were troubled by those who did They ate in spite of thinking it was wrong and their conscience was troubled They ate without regard to the feelings of others They limited their liberty from concern for other brothers Those who felt it was wrong to eat

  17. 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. 25 And everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.

  18. 1 Corinthians 9:26-27 26 Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; 27 but I buffet my body and make it my slave, lest possibly, after I have preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.

  19. For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were… (10:1) • All under the cloud • All passed through the sea • All were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea • All ate the same spiritual food • All drank the same spiritual drink Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness (10:5).

  20. 1 Corinthians 10:11-13 11 Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.

  21. Universal versus Local Application What sort of applications should be made to the teachings found in 1 Corinthians 11:4-6?

  22. The Resurrection • Christ rose from the dead • We will also rise from the dead

  23. First CorinthiansStriving for Unity John Stevenson

  24. Group Activity You have just taken on the role of youth pastor in your church… The group tends to be divided into several cliques. Worse still, some kids in the group are not included in any clique. These “misfits” are treated as insignificant and are viewed as offering little to the “important” people in the group. Form an action plan to deal with this problem

  25. 2nd Corinthians Defending the Faith

  26. The Second Epistle to the Corinthians • The most biographical of all of Paul’s writings. • This epistle is written some time after 1st Corinthians. Some of the problems in that first epistle had been settled; some still remained. • The legitimacy of Paul’s apostleship had been brought into question. • Another collection for the church in Jerusalem.

  27. Occasions for the Epistle • Paul explains why he has not returned to Corinth (1:15 – 2:4). • Restoration of a repentant believer (2:5-11). • Encouragement to complete an offering for the church in Jerusalem (8-9). • To affirm his apostleship and teachings which have come under attack.

  28. Outline of 2nd Corinthians Chapters 1-7 Chapters 8-9 Chapters 10-13 An encouragement of the Corinthians’ financial ministry A defense of Paul’s apostolic ministry A presentation of Paul’s apostolic ministry Personal Practical Personal

  29. Introduction (1:1-11) Travel Plans: Why Paul didn’t come to Corinth (1:12 - 2:13) Presentation of Paul’s Apostolic Ministry (2:14 - 7:16) Collection of a Love Gift for the Jerusalem Church (8-9) Defense of Paul’s Apostolic Ministry (10:1 - 12:10) Travel Plans: Paul’s upcoming trip to Corinth (12:11 - 13:10) Conclusion (13:11-14)

  30. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

  31. 2 Corinthians 1:8-10 8 For we do not want you to be unaware, brethren, of our affliction which came to us in Asia, that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life; 9 indeed, we had the sentence of death within ourselves in order that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead; 10 who delivered us from so great a peril of death, and will deliver us, He on whom we have set our hope. And He will yet deliver us…

  33. 2 Corinthians 2:1-3 1 But I determined this for my own sake, that I would not come to you in sorrow again. 2 For if I cause you sorrow, who then makes me glad but the one whom I made sorrowful? 3 And this is the very thing I wrote you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from those who ought to make me rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy would be the joy of you all.

  34. 2 Corinthians 2:4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears; not that you should be made sorrowful, but that you might know the love which I have especially for you.

  35. 2 Corinthians 2:6-8 6 Sufficient for such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the majority, 7 so that on the contrary you should rather forgive and comfort him, lest somehow such a one be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8 Wherefore I urge you to reaffirm your love for him.

  37. 2 Corinthians 2:14-16 14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in His triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place. 15 For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; 16 to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is adequate for these things?

  38. 2 Corinthians 2:17 For we are not like many, peddling the word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God.

  39. 2 Corinthians 3:1-3 1 Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some, letters of commendation to you or from you? 2 You are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all men; 3 being manifested that you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts.

  40. 2 Corinthians 3:4-6 4 And such confidence we have through Christ toward God. 5 Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God, 6 who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

  41. New Covenant The Spirit Old Covenant Tablets of stone Tablets of human hearts The letter kills The Spirit gives life The letter If the ministry of the death, in letters engraved on stones, came with glory… How shall the ministry of the Spirit fail to be even more with glory?

  42. 2 Corinthians 3:12-13 Having therefore such a hope, we use great boldness in our speech, 13 and are not as Moses, who used to put a veil over his face that the sons of Israel might not look intently at the end of what was fading away.
