The Redesign for’09 • Schedule for Grades 6-8 • Using the PRFC schedule • 6th grade on same schedule as 7th & 8thgrade • Addition of 6th grade flex course • Aiming for increased flexibility, more time for advisory groups & creation of an 8th period to address school-wide initiatives • Recommending trimester calendar

  3. The Redesign for’09 • Renaming of Applied Arts courses to Encore courses • Redesigning Encore courses to implement and reflect skills of the 21st Century and to align with the high school SLC model • Redesigning and expanding elective courses to increase exposure to the high school SLC model

The Redesign for ‘09 • Credits and Graduation Requirements - Grades 6-8 • Preparing students for high school • Credits will be earned to ensure mastery and ensure meaningful middle school experiences • Supports in place to help students with credit completion if necessary • Some classes may count for graduation requirements such as World Language

The Redesign for ‘09 • Safe, Nurturing Environment • Teams – Grades 6-8 • Increase teacher training and accountability on teaming to improve interdisciplinary teaming • Exploring looping of teachers with students grades 7-8 • Advisory Groups – Grades 6-8 • 6th grade pure advisory program • 7th and 8th looped advisory • Longer advisory time to strengthen relationships • Improve and implement advisory curriculum

  7. The Redesign for ‘09 • Integrated Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment – Grades 6-8 • World language – Introduce earlier • 6th grade – exploratory class • 7th & 8th grade – require 1 trimester class • 7th & 8th grade – option for year-long class to meet graduation requirements

The Redesign for ‘09 • Next steps • Dividing up and purchasing teacher resources to open 3 middle schools. • Determine the number of sections at each level and putting together teams of teachers. • Determining the number of encore staff in each building. • Building a master schedule that allows implementation of new programming.

The Redesign for ‘09 • Determining what can be phased in over time • Making sure we continue to building the foundation that will allow our students to feed into the two high schools • Making sure all the curriculum revisions are addressing our rigorous standards and meeting the needs of students in the 21st century. • Making sure our current students are receiving a quality education

The Redesign for ‘09 • Integrated Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment – Grades 9-12 • From freshmen experience to grade level experiences • Continue Advance Placement, College in Schools, and PSEO • Seniors may be required to demonstrate learning through a ‘capstone’ project and / or service learning
