  2. Information as a resource to the firm • Quality information enables the firm to operate more effectively in the marketplace, and make better decisions

  3. Systems perspective • Information systems are made up of collections of technologies and social structures that interact and evolve in relationship to each other

  4. Categories of information needs • Problems/decisions drive the need for information by the firm. A close ‘fit’ between the needs of the problem and the information provided will help improve successful problem solving • ‘Uncertainty’ – problem is clearly defined, once the right information is found a decision can be made • ‘Equivocality’ – uncertainty about the nature of the problem and what information might help solve it

  5. IT as a transformative force • Bigger bandwidth, larger storage capacity, and faster processors have spurred innovation and transformative technologies that transform social, political, and economic structures
