What is the difference Right to Know Right to Understand • Hazard Communication • Chemical Manufacturers • Provide information to employers and workers by putting labels on containers and preparing Material Safety Data Sheets • No standard in formatting hazard information • MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS • GHS • Builds on current standard by; • Provides a single set of harmonized criteria for classifying chemicals according to their health and physical hazards • Specifies hazard communication elements for labeling and safety data sheets • SAFETY DATA SHEETS NOW CALLED

  5. Major changes • Hazard Classification: • Chemical manufacturers and importers are required to determine the hazards of the chemicals they produce or import. • New updated standard provides specific criteria to address • *health and physical hazards • *classification of chemical mixtures

  6. Major changes • Labels: • Chemical manufacturers and importers must provide ,for each hazard class and category, a label that includes • *signal word • *pictogram • *hazard statement • *precautionary statement

  7. Major changes • Safety Data Sheets: • The new format requires 16 specific sections, ensuring consistency in presentation of important protection information.
