  1. “The Life of David – 14”2 Samuel 6:1-1205/31/2009Dr. Dane Boyles

  2. The Life of David – 14 Introduction • Has there ever been a time in your life when God rained on your parade? • In our text today we come to just such an occurrence in the life of David.

  3. The Life of David – 14 • In the end, God teaches all of Israel, and us as well, what it means to be a true worshipper of the LORD. • 23God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth... • 24such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. (John 4:23- 24)

  4. The Life of David – 14 • Our text records the story of David’s two attempts to bring the ark of God up to Jerusalem. • Each attempt has three elements:

  5. The Life of David – 14 • a procession filled with celebration • a blessing • a death

  6. The Life of David – 14 • In the responses of the three major characters in the account, Uzzah, David, and Michal, we learn what constitutes the difference between true and false worship.

  7. The Life of David – 14 • The First Attempt to Bring the Ark Up (6:1-12a). • Procession of the Ark Upward Towards Jerusalem (6:1-5). • 1David again brought together out of Israel chosen men, thirty thousand in all. (2 Samuel 6:1)

  8. The Life of David – 14 • 2He and all his men set out from Baalah of Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name, the name of the LORD Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim that are on the ark. (2 Samuel 6:2)

  9. The Life of David – 14 • 3They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart (2 Samuel 6:3)

  10. The Life of David – 14 • 4with the ark of God on it, and Ahio was walking in front of it. • 5David and the whole house of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the LORD, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals. (2 Samuel 6:4-5)

  11. The Life of David – 14 • 1O LORD, remember David and all the hardships he endured. • 2He swore an oath to the LORD and made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob: (Psalms 132:1-2)

  12. The Life of David – 14 • 3“I will not enter my house or go to my bed- • 4I will allow no sleep to my eyes, no slumber to my eyelids, • 5till I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.” (Psalms 132:3-5)

  13. The Life of David – 14 • How different David was from Saul, who showed no concern for the ark of God. • But David is consumed by the ark.

  14. The Life of David – 14 • The sons of Abinadab adopt a Philistine innovation, placing the ark on a new ox-cart--a high tech approach, one that was much more efficient and less cumbersome. • But this new means of transporting the ark is not without its problems.

  15. The Life of David – 14 • The Death of Uzzah and the Halting of the Royal Procession (6:6-10). • 6When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. (2 Samuel 6:6)

  16. The Life of David – 14 • 7The LORD’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down and he died there beside the ark of God. (2 Samuel 6:7)

  17. The Life of David – 14 • 8Then David was angry because the LORD’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah. (2 Samuel 6:8)

  18. The Life of David – 14 • 9David was afraid of the LORD that day and said, “How can the ark of the LORD ever come to me?” • 10He was not willing to take the ark of the LORD to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. (2 Samuel 6:9-10)

  19. The Life of David – 14 • 11The ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the LORD blessed him and his entire household. (2 Samuel 6:11)

  20. The Life of David – 14 • The scene is one of unbridled ecstasy before the Lord. • But, like most events in David’s life, his joy is short lived.

  21. The Life of David – 14 • Uzzah’s reaction is instantaneous. • Human hands seizing the Holy! • David is enraged.

  22. The Life of David – 14 • How could God rain on his parade? • But, the question has to be asked, “Whose parade was it, anyway?” • Quickly, David’s anger turns to fear. • He wonders, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” • This results in another strange turn of events.

  23. The Life of David – 14 • The Lord Blesses the House of Obed-Edom (6:11-12a). • 11…the LORD blessed [Oded-edom] and his entire household. (2 Samuel 6:11, NIV) • This is the turning point of the story.

  24. The Life of David – 14 • What This Teaches Us Today: • To worship the LORD, you must be consumed by your desire to worship Him. • The question is: why was David persnickety?

  25. The Life of David – 14 2. When you worship the LORD, you must come to Him as He desires. 3. There is no excuse for ignorance.

  26. The Life of David – 14 4. Not knowing God’s will ends in death. • 6“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)

  27. The Life of David – 14 Conclusion • No fake gospels welcome. • That’s why the LORD describes worship.

  28. The Life of David – 14 • It teaches us to avoid adopting innovations. • It removes our ignorance. • It teaches us to depend on Jesus.
