  2. For the week of November 15th, 2010: • Experiment: Potentiometric Titration of Fe(II) with Ce(IV) • Quiz: Material in the Handout

Purpose • Today you will be using Lewis Dot diagrams, the ball and stick models and the VSEPR theory to construct a series of molecules (Part II in your lab manual) ALxNy Notation • A - The Central Atom • L - The Ligands (bonding pairs) • X - The number of Ligands • N - Non-bonding electron pairs • Y - The number of non-bonding electron pairs • The geometric arrangement of each molecule you construct today will be determined by taking the sum of X and Y

Procedure Construct the six molecules on page 103 and organize in your notebook with the following information FOR EACH MOLECULE (make a table): Molecule name # of valence e- (show your work) Lewis dot structure X and Y (for ALxNy) Angles (and axial and equatorial positions when applicable) Geometry Observations on what you did today for the lab

  5. Final notes Before you leave the lab today, make sure you give me your carbon copies from your lab notebook Use the protractors in your modeling kit to find the bond angles No class data today! You are only responsible for your own data
