  1. HOW AYURVEDA AND YOGA THERAPY CAN HELP RESOLVE THE GROWING MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS– PART 4 OF 4

  2. We live in a dualistic world of right or wrong, good or bad, rich or poor etc. In this dualistic world, we often imagine that the external world dictates our situations such as governments, our bosses, our parents, our spouses etc. This causes more problems for our Mental Health as we continue to play the ‘blame game’. • Happiness is difficult for all human beings. In today’s society, we try religion, reading self-development books, trying to determine our life purpose and possibly seeing a therapistto help with improveour mental health. • William Shakespeare summed it up perfectly in Macbeth; • To be, or not to be, that is the question: • Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer • The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, • Or to take arms against a sea of troubles • And by opposing end them. To die—to sleep, • No more; and by a sleep to say we end • The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks

  3. Spiritual Therapies • The Upanishads is a sacred text in Ayurveda and Yoga. When I initially studied Ayurveda, the Upanishads formed part of the teachings but I never fully appreciated the importance of these teachings at the time. • The Upanishads are the collection of Sanskrit texts which are the direct teachings received at the foot of the ancient Indian sages. The term 'Upanishad' literally means, "sitting down near" or "sitting close to", and implies listening carefully to the text that describe the fundamental truths of the universe. These are important texts in Ayurveda and Yoga which cover the aspect of duality. • Quick judgment can save lives, but in most cases, we judge when there is not much at stake and with the primary goal of being right. In today’s world of duality, i.e. us and them, we believe that external factors are the cause of our suffering, but in fact, we have all the power. But we think small and limited and believe that our happiness is locked into another.

  4. Whoever sees all beings in the Self, and the Self in all beings, hates none. For one who sees oneness everywhere, how can there be delusion or grief?” • The concept of Oneness is reflected in both Ayurveda and Yoga, i.e. each human being is a manifestation of the Divine. In order to live healthy, balanced lives, we need to live in harmony with nature and oneness with the Universe. • ‘Oneness’ is difficult to practice, but John Lennon simplified Oneness as, “ I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It’s just that the translations have gone wrong.” • Many religious and spiritual teachings ascribe to the importance of a non-dualistic approach which will promote good mental health. There is no right or wrong, and all paths lead to God or Universe or Higher Power. At the end of the day, we are all ‘truth -seekers. But we cannot read about it or learn it we have to experience it.
