  1. Warm up for September 27, 2012 What do plants and animals have in common? What differences are there between plants and animals?

  2. REVIEW • 1. When working in a group what do you do when you have a question? • ANSWER: ask group members first, then raise your hand to ask the teacher. • How can you be respectful to other group members? • ANSWER: Listen to their ideas and don’t always have to be the one to talk.

  3. 3. List 8 things that all living things have in common. • ANSWER: • All living things: • Grow • Reproduce • Respond to changes in the environment • Move • Take in nutrients • Use oxygen for cellular respiration • Produce wastes to be eliminated • Are made of cells

  4. 4.Define “organism” in your own words. • ANSWER: they are your words…. • 5. Who is Linnaeus and why is he important? • ANSWER: Linnaeus is the scientist who came up with the system of classification we use today including how we write scientific names. He is known as the “Father of taxonomy”.

Acer saccharum • ANSWER: A and C • How do you know they are closely related? • ANSWER: The first part of the name is the genus name. Organisms in the same genus are closely related. Therefore, A and C are closely related.

  7. 9.If 2 organisms are in the same class, what other levels of classification do they share? • ANSWER: Everything above which in this case is the phylum and kingdom. • 10.Study the “Guidelines for Scientific Drawings” on p.22 in your Survival Guide. You will have to identify and correct mistakes in a scientific drawing.
