  1. 9/28/10Aim: What is the true size and shape of the earth? Do Now: How would my neighbor’s dog barking be considered a pollutant? Hw: R&H pp.18-20, A&E #1-17

  2. Size and Shape of Earth • Earth’s shape is almost perfectly spherical with it slightly flattening at the poles and bulging at the equator. • Earth’s actual shape is called an oblate spheroid.

  3. Spheres of Earth • All settled in density order with the lithosphere on the bottom and the atmosphere on top. • 1.Lithosphere- includes the solid crust of the earth and the stiffer mantle. Approx. 100km thick. R.T. p.10 • 2. Hydrosphere – a thin layer of water that lies between the lithosphere and atmosphere. • R.T. p.1 • 3. Atmosphere – the shell of gasses that surrounds the earth. R.T. pp.1,14

  4. A model is a way to represent the properties of an object or system. • Many systems are too big or too small to represent accurately so a proportion must be used to scale the measurements appropriately. • All proportions are set up as follows: Real World Part = Model Part Real World Whole Model Whole

  5. 9/29/10Aim: What evidence do we have for the earth’s shape? • Do Now: • 1. List all evidences for earth’s shape. • 2. What is the true shape of the earth? • HW – Finish labs.

  6. 9/30/10Aim: Topic 1 Review • Do Now: • Get in test formation, take out reference tables and a calculator. • HW- Track storms, finish labs.
