Resident as Team Leader At the end of the session, the learner will be able to: • Define what effective leadership is and why it is important. • Describe effective characteristics of a resident as team leader. • Identify the fundamentals of management. • Describe the role of supervision in leadership.

  4. Brainstorming Exercises • What are some characteristics of an effective resident leader? • What makes a good team on your inpatient services? • What are you greatest challenges as team leaders?

Fundamentals of Leadership • Set Goals • Personal goals & practical behavior • Establish team goals • Catch People Doing Something Right • Immediately praise • Don’t wait for perfect behavior • Give Negative Feedback Immediately • Don’t wait until end of rotation • Single criticism better received them several at once One-Minute Manager (Blanchard, Johnson, 1983: Brown, 1987)
