2011 NERAOC – Session #32Managing the Matching Dilemma 1. Determine Available Matching Dollars • Split total “general fund” budget into categories: a. Instructional b. Administrative and Indirect c. Possible Match • Get creative with formula match commitments – is there anything that falls into pool ‘b’ that could be used as match?

Track Match Commitments • Split possible match by PI, Program, and/or Unit. • Pull non-administrative committed match for federal appropriations right off the top of the possible match pool. • List any other match commitments (proposed or awarded) for quick-glance availability.
2011 NERAOC – Session #32Managing the Matching Dilemma • Look for Institutional Partnerships • Find existing expertise outside the unit or institution. • Build relationships with other researchers, agents, and faculty. • Consider an integrated approach to research proposals. Not only does this allow the project to draw on a larger pool of knowledge, it also allows it to draw on a larger pool of match!
