  3. George Washington • George was our first president. • He didn’t actually wear a powdered wig. • He was over 6’ with flowing auburn hair and pale blue eyes. • He set the standard of 2 terms of office for presidents. Back to Portrait Menu

  4. Benjamin Franklin • Benjamin Franklin was an avid statesman and scientist. • His son was born to a prostitute. • He was considered a fugitive in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. • He was the oldest member of the Continental Congress. Back to Portrait Menu

  5. Andrew Jackson • Andrew Jackson was our 7th president and a slave owner. • He defended New Orleans from British forces during the War of 1812. • He was an opponent of Nullification. • He personally led an invasion force into Florida to conquer the lands for the U.S.. Back to Portrait Menu

Frederick Douglass • Frederick Douglass was born a slave and was self educated. • He ran an abolitionist newspaper called “The North Star”. • He was implicated as a coconspirator in John Brown’s raid on the Harper’s Ferry armory. • He openly criticized slavery and participated in the Underground Railroad. Abraham Lincoln • He was our 16th President. • He enacted the Emancipation Proclamation which freed the slaves. • The Emancipation Proclamation did not grant citizenship to the freed slaves. • Lincoln was a deeply depressed man with a big sense of humor; he loved to tell stories. Theodore Roosevelt • He was our 26th President. • He fought in the Spanish-American War. • His mother and wife both died on the same day within a 3 hour span. • He created many of the famous National Parks and wildlife reserves here in the United States including Yosemite. Franklin Delano Roosevelt • FDR was our 32nd President. • He suffered from polio and preferred to be photographed from the waste up. • His New Deal economic program helped lift the U.S. out of the Great Depression. • He is the only president to have been elected to more than two terms of office. Douglas Macarthur • Macarthur was General in the U.S. military during WWII. • He conquered many islands in the Pacific fighting. • He had to abandon soldiers in Bataan in the Philippines in 1942, He vowed “I will return.” • In 1944 he made good on his promise and waded through the shore of Manila and later freed his imprisoned men. Martin Luther King Jr. • Dr. King is arguably the central figure of the Civil Rights movement in the U.S.. • He was jailed many times in his life while protesting including in Birmingham, AL. • While imprisoned in Birmingham he wrote his Famous Letter from a Birmingham Jail. • His “I Have A Dream” speech that was given from the foot of the Lincoln Memorial is arguably the most famous American speech of all time.   12. John F. Kennedy • JFK was the youngest person to be elected president of the U.S.. • He was our 35th president. • He reportedly had an affair with actress/entertainer Marilyn Monroe. • He was assassinated in November of 1963. Back to Portrait Menu
