The term “Social Darwinism” was invented in the 19th century • Main idea is that humans, like animals, compete with each other in natural selection • Ideals based on Charles Darwin, an English naturalist • Some Darwinist’s ideals include: • Government should not interfere with the people by regulating the economy or helping the poor • Favoring a laissez-faire (leave things be) political and economic strategy with competition and self interest highly effective • The differences between races, nations, and individuals mean that some are more fit to survive than others • Many believe Social Darwinism explains the rationalization behind racism, capitalism, and imperialism Social Darwinism Charles Darwin http://www.kandle.ie/2009/09/25/darwin-faith-comerford/

Can be defined as “The application of Darwinism to the study of human society, specifically a theory in sociology that individuals or groups achieve advantage over others as the result of genetic or biological superiority." Social Darwinism is the belief that all personal and social problems were inherited. The proponents of social Darwinism believed poverty and many other social ills were the result of bad genes.
