Survey Background • Surveys play an important role in understanding the feelings of employees • Data can be used by leaders and managers to better understand employee morale, motivation, and retention • 70% of U.S. organizations today survey their employees either on an annual or bi-annual basis 1

Survey Background • VCDSA members work in the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department & the District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation • VCDSA represents a super-majority (99.5%) of Ventura County’s: Provisional Deputy Sheriffs, Deputy Sheriff TraineesDeputy Sheriffs, Senior Deputy Sheriffs,Sergeants, District Attorney Investigators I, II, III& Senior District Attorney Investigators

  4. Survey Background • 2006 Survey was designed to measure employee views and opinions on:- Quality of Life - Compensation- Potential for Turnover- Morale- Promotional Opportunities- Fair Treatment by Managers- Direction of Organization- Availability of Ongoing Training

  5. Survey Background • Researchers have Linked Employee Morale, Satisfaction, Quality of Work-life, and Organizational Commitment to:- Employee Performance- Employee Motivation- Quality of Work- Employee Responsiveness- Increased Turnover 2

  7. Survey Demographics • 685 Surveys Mailed to VCDSA Members • 414 Surveys Returned for Analysis 60.4% Participation
