  2. Contents 1. Introduction 2. Key Features 3. Multimode user terminals 4. Terminal mobility 5. Personal mobility 6. Security and Privacy 7. Conclusions

  3. Introduction • Communication is exchange of information • Communication may be wired or wireless • Mobile communication has undergone three generations • The next generation of mobile communication is fourth generation

  4. Key Features of 4G Technology • High Usability • Support for multimedia services at low transmission cost • Personalization • Integrated services

  5. Multimode user Terminals • Multimode user terminals are essential in 4G systems • They adopt different networks by reconfiguring themselves • These eliminate the need to use multiple terminals or multiple hardware components in a terminal • One way of implementing Multimode user terminal is to adopt the software radio approach

  6. An ideal software radio receiver

  7. Terminal mobility • To provide wireless services anytime and anywhere, terminal mobility is a must in 4G systems • It allows users to roam across boundaries of wireless networks • There are two main issues in this: (i). Location management (ii). Handoff management • Location management tracks and locates a mobile terminal • Handoff management maintains ongoing communications when terminal roams

  8. Vertical and Horizontal handoff of a mobile terminal UMTS COVERAGE GSM Coverage WLAN Coverage vertical handoff horizontal handoff

  9. Personal mobility • This concentrates on the movement of user instead of user ’s terminals • It provides personal communications and personalized operating environments • In this each user is given an unique identifier and served by some personal mobile agents • These agents acts as mediators between the user and the internet • A user belonging to a home network has servers with the updated user profile • When the user moves from home network to a visiting network, user ‘s agents will migrate to the new network

  10. Security and Privacy • Different standards implement their security for their unique security requirements • The key concern in security designs for 4G networks is flexibility • Tiny SESAME is a light weight reconfigurable security mechanism that provides security service for multimedia applications in 4G networks

  11. Conclusions • 4G systems will support comprehensive and personalized services. • 4G systems must be hastened as some of the video applications can not be contained within 3G • 4G networks allows the users to use any system at anytime and anywhere • The data rates targeted are 20MBPS and that will be the 4th generation in mobile communication technology
