  1. Preventing Heart Attacks A modest but groundbreaking study found that strict dietary and lifestyle modifications can reverse the blockage of the arteries and prevent heart attacks. According to the study, men and women who strictly adhered to the daily routine might reverse the effects of atherosclerosis, a condition in which blockages in the arteries cause a heart attack, by eating a vegetarian diet, engaging in moderate exercise, and practicing yoga and meditation for an hour each day. This study, according to experts, is the first to show that this kind of blockage can be cleared without the need for surgery or cholesterol-lowering medications. The study was presented at the American Heart Association meeting in New Orleans and was carried out by Dr. Dean Ornish, the head of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California. The findings also imply that the existing medical recommendations for serious heart disease patients' behavior modifications are not sufficiently comprehensive.

  2. Exercise and dietary modifications can reduce the progression of cardiac disease, but they cannot reverse it, according to earlier research. Although the study did not identify the proportion of improvement attributable only to the lifestyle modifications, the researchers did point out that stress- reduction techniques have been demonstrated to facilitate recovery from a number of illnesses, including hypertension. However, other specialists question the necessity of stress-reduction techniques, which are not presently part of the accepted guidelines for those with serious cardiac disease. Certain cardiac rehabilitation specialists doubt that the majority of patients with heart disease could adhere to such stringent dietary modifications.
